Why counselling?

Mannamead Counselling's primary concern is to help people achieve a greater sense of control and well-being in their lives.

It may be that you are wanting to:

  • adjust to difficult and unexpected changes
  • explore challenging relationships, past and present
  • move on from repetitive thoughts and behaviours
  • connect with feelings or manage those that are overwhelming
  • understand and lessen anxiety, depression or loneliness
  • develop the awareness and confidence to be you and to live your life

The sessions are yours to bring whatever you wish.

Everyone is welcome.

How we work

Sally and Edward are both integrative counsellors. We therefore work with several different therapeutic approaches according to your individual needs.

Our main approach is person-centred. This means that we have a strong belief in and deep respect for the uniqueness and worth of every individual. We are not here to offer our advice but to support you in discovering your own answers and live in a more personally satisfying way.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is another approach that we use. Sometimes people become trapped in a vicious cycle of negative thoughts, feelings and behaviour, all of which are interconnected. CBT offers a way of challenging and changing these cycles.

For clients with autism, ADHD or Specific Learning Difficulties such as dyslexia, we offer psychoeducation in various areas including: executive functioning; socialising and relationships; verbal and non-verbal communication; boundaries; exploring emotions around a diagnosis; managing the work environment; transitioning to university; and sensory issues.

Sandplay Therapy

In addition to talking therapy Sally is also trained in the use of sandplay therapy . This takes place in the therapy room using a wooden tray of sand. Water and fire (candles) can also be used. Although it is not a silent therapy, the emphasis is on non-verbal communication and it is highly visual. Using miniature objects, the client creates small worlds within the sand which may reflect inner thoughts, struggles and concerns. It has been compared to ‘dreaming while awake’ – the miniatures are chosen and placed in the sand without too much conscious thought. Looking at this inner world manifest in the sand can bring understanding, awareness and acceptance.
